    Christmas Project: Ornaments (and More!)

    Creation-Christmas-Cross Free Printable

    Use this free printable to focus on the full meaning of Christmas! Your student(s) can cut, color and use them as ornaments, a matching game or a “find the differences game”.

    While we may think of the story of Christmas beginning with the angel appearing to Mary, it could be more accurate to think of it as starting in Genesis with Creation. God created a perfect world, but when Adam and Eve disobeyed God sin entered the world and ever since all of Earth lives under the curse of sin. Knowing about sin explains why we need a Savior and how wonderful it is that Jesus was born! As Isaac Watts says in “Joy to the World”.

    Joy to the world; the Lord is come;
    Let Earth receive her King;
    Let ev'ry heart prepare him room,
    And heav'n and nature sing.

    Joy to the Earth, the Savior reigns;
    Our mortal songs employ,
    While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains,
    Repeat the sounding joy.

    No more let sins and sorrows grow,
    Nor thorns infest the ground;
    He comes to make his blessings flow
    Far as the curse is found.

    Help your students recognize the connection between Creation and Christmas and the Cross with this free printable. You’ll find 12 ornaments featuring:

    • Each of the 7 days of creation
    • The tree from which Eve took the forbidden fruit
    • A prophecy of the coming Messiah
    • A silhouette of the Nativity
    • A cross
    • The empty tomb with the stone rolled away

    You can print these and use them 3 ways.

    Ornament Activity

    Materials:

    • Printed PDF (as many copies as you would like) on either regular printing paper or white cardstock
    • Coloring Supplies (crayons and/or markers, etc.)
    • One-hole punch or scissors

    12 Ribbons or thread (cut in 5-inch sections) or 12 ornament hooks for hanging ornaments on a tree, wreathe or garland. You will need more hangers if you are making multiple sets of ornaments, of course!

    Print as many sets of the ornaments as you like. Depending on the age and abilities of your student(s), either you or they can cut out the ornaments. Then use the one-hole punch or scissors to make a hole over the X so that you will be able to hang the ornaments. Next let your student(s) color the ornaments. Lastly, if you are using ribbon or thread to hang your ornaments, loop it through and tie it so that you can hang your ornaments. Or put the ornament hangers through the holes. Then hang your ornaments on your tree, wreathe or garland and let them tell the story of the full meaning of Christmas!

    Memory Game

    Materials:

    • 2 Printed Sets of ornaments on either regular white printing paper or white cardstock
    • Scissors
    • Coloring Supplies (if desired – crayons and/or markers, etc.)
    • Laminating supplies or clear shipping tape (if desired)

    Print and cut out 2 sets of the ornament printable. If desired, let your student(s) color the ornaments so that each matching pair match. 😊 At this point, you can go ahead and start playing the memory matching game. That said, if you would like to make your ornaments a little sturdier, either laminate them or put clear shipping tape over both sides of each ornament and trim off any excess.

    Find the Differences Picture Game

    Materials:

    • 2 Printed Sets of ornaments on either regular white printing paper or white cardstock
    • Scissors
    • Coloring Supplies (crayons and/or markers, etc.)

    Let your student(s) test their observation skills! Print and cut out 2 sets of ornaments. Either you or your student(s) can color the ornaments, making sure that each pair is almost alike but not quite the same. Then see who can spot the differences!

    Have a student who loves to craft? Let them create more than one set of ornaments, memory cards or “find the difference” pictures and give them as a gift! Or each of your students could color an ornament or two, write a little message on the back of their artwork with their names, and give them as a gift. These could be a good gift for a grandparent or another family member, a teacher, a pastor or friend to thank them, show them love and share the joy of Christmas!

    We hope you enjoy this activity and pray for the Lord’s blessings on you and yours this Christmas season. Amid the hustle and bustle these days might bring, may we all remember that the Lord came to Earth to save sinners like us and has given us so many beautiful things in creation to enjoy – the “wonders of his love” as Isaac Watts says in the last verse of “Joy to the World”.

    He rules the world with truth and grace,
    And makes the nations prove
    The glories of his righteousness,
    And wonders of his love.

    Merry Christmas!
    Science Shepherd
