After a hopefully smooth year of 1st grade science, it’s time to start looking for what to do next. Whether your student completed Introductory Science last year or you’re looking to switch curriculum, we’ll help you choose the right 2nd grade homeschool science course from Science Shepherd.
What about 1st grade? If you’re not quite ready to get started with 2nd grade science, check out our 1st grade homeschool science curriculum options.
For students in second grade who are just beginning formal science, our Introductory Science is the best course to start with. Introductory Science is a video-based course that reviews an array of subjects, from creation week in Genesis 1, to scientific skills and tools, meteorology, geology, plants, animals, physical sciences and more.
Introductory Science is scheduled over 35 weeks, with 5 video lessons per week (average lesson time of about 2.5 minutes), along with corresponding workbook pages to help students focus on key concepts from each video. There are also activities integrated into the workbook for fun hands-on learning, with many of them also presented on video to guide students (and parents!) through the activity/experiment.
Workbooks for Introductory Science are available as Level A or Level B options. Both Levels review the same lesson material, but Level B is written to be slightly more advanced. For 2nd grade, the Level A Workbook is likely the best option, as it is written for 1st grade to 3rd grade, or ages 6-9, while Level B is written for 3rd grade to 5th grade, or ages 8-11. If your 2nd grader is a strong reader, you could consider Level B. Because the Level A and Level B Workbooks cover the same lesson videos, families with children in multiple grades can easily work together!

If your 2nd grader has already completed Introductory Science, or a course similar to it, Earth Science is “next up” in our progression. It’s also a video-based course, with an overall structure very similar to Introductory Science. Topics covered in Earth Science include Earth’s structure, rocks, volcanoes, oceanography, weather and climate, and more.
Earth Science utilizes Level A and Level B formatting, with the Level A videos and workbook geared toward 2nd to 4th grade (ages 7-10) and Level B material toward 4th to 6th grade (ages 10-12). However, a big difference compared to Introductory Science is that Level B includes around 40 additional classes for more advanced study in select areas. But don’t worry, students in both Levels can still complete the course together, those in Level B will just have an extra video or two each week (on average). The average lesson time for either Level is about 4.5 minutes. For 2nd grade, the Level A videos and workbook will likely be the best option.
