Your oldest is now in 1st grade and you’re ready to begin homeschooling. How exciting! Or, perhaps your youngest is ready to start school and it’s time to look for a new science curriculum. In either case, and any circumstance in between, this post will help you choose the right Science Shepherd homeschool course for 1st grade.
While our formal science curriculum begins in 1st grade, there are a couple of options for pre-K and kindergarten students, and younger. For students who are not yet reading or just beginning, our “What Can You Do?” book series is a great option. These board books for Little Learners, beautifully illustrated by Kate Fallahee, introduce toddlers and young students to interesting animals from around the globe, like the quokka of Australia and the capybara of South America, and highlight a unique ability given them by God. Each book concludes by featuring different ways God has made people special. Whether “doing science” as a bedtime book or reading aloud with your student during the day, our board books are a fun way to get your Little Learner interested in science.
If your young learner is already looking for something more formal, consider jumping into Introductory Science, with or without completing the workbook, depending on your student’s reading ability. We’ll review that course in more detail now.
In general, the starting point with Science Shepherd for 1st grade students, and even up to 5th grade if new to formal science, will be Introductory Science. This video-based course, well, introduces students to a broad array of subjects within science, from creation week in Genesis 1, to life science, oceanography, geology, physical sciences and more.
Introductory Science is scheduled over 35 weeks, with 1 video lesson per day (average lesson time of about 2.5 minutes), along with corresponding workbook pages for students to complete to help them focus on key concepts from each video. There are also activities included in the workbook for fun hands-on learning, with many of them presented on video to guide students (and parents!) through the activity/experiment.
Workbooks for Introductory Science are available as Level A or Level B options. Both cover the same lesson material, but Level B is written to be slightly more advanced. For a 1st grader, the Level A Workbook is likely the best option, as it is written for 1st grade to 3rd grade, or ages 6-9, while Level B is written for 3rd grade to 5th grade, or ages 8-11. Because the Level A and Level B Workbooks cover the same lesson videos, families with children in multiple grades can easily work together!
